Ericsson T39 & Variants
When dismantling any phone, great care should be taken to ensure that no damage is caused to any of the parts. Rough handling may result in severe damage of many parts, and if proper anti-static procedures are not followed, electrostatic damage may result in any electronic component.
Before commencing, it is recommended that the correct tools are purchased for the job in hand. If you do not have access to the proper Ericsson service tools, stiff but non-brittle plastic can be used as a substitute (cut up an old floppy disk, but you may have to chamfer the edges).
Step 1. Firstly, remove the battery and aerial. The aerial may well be tightly secured, but can be released by firmly grasping it and whilst pulling it away from the top of the phone, waggle it from side to side.
Step 2. Holding the phone away from you, insert the tool (or piece of plastic) into the join between the plastic fascia and the metal back of the phone.
Step 3. Leave the first tool in place, and insert a second one just next to the aerial cavity. Once this tool is in place, slide it carefully, but firmly to the opposite side of the phone to disengage the locking catches. Take care not to rush this step, as the lugs are easily damaged if care is not exercised.
Step 4. Now that the top catches have been disengaged, you should have enough of a gap to insert the opening tool (or piece of plastic) in the side of the phone. Insert the tool in the gap at the top of the phone, and slide it firmly (and carefully) down to the bottom of the phone. This will disengage all the locking catches on the side of the phone. Repeat the same procedure on the opposite side.
Step 5. Now that both sides and the top of the phone are loose, you can fold the fascia away from the back of the phone. Remove the fascia from top to bottom in the same manner as reading a book. Do NOT attempt to lift it completely clear of the back panel, as the two are still joined at this stage by the microphone cable.
Step 6. In the photo below, we see a close-up view of the microphone cable assembly. This can be simply removed by pulling it up and away from the circuit board. Try not to exert any sideways pressure on the connector, as the pins below could easily be damaged.
Step 7. To remove the screen and speaker assembly from the main circuit board, you must release the three small Torx T6 screws that hold it in place.
Step 8. To re-assemble the phone, firstly re-connect the microphone/flip wiring, then starting at the top of the phone, gently press the two halves together ensuring that you do not place too much pressure on the casing. When the phone is completely re-assembled, ensure that the side slider button operates freely, and that you have not trapped the flip/microphone wiring in the bottom of the casing.
Step 9. Once all the reassembly steps have been completed, thoroughly test all the features on the phone to ensure that you have not forgotten anything, or caused any damage whilst inside the phone.
